Firstly, the applications and developments of energy dissipation in hydraulic jump were reviewed in this paper. Then a new type of stilling basin, Stilling Basin with Shallow-Water Cushion (SBSWC), i.e. normal stilling basin with a shallow water cushion, was developed. It overcomes such shortcomings in normal stilling basin as high velocity nearby the pool bottom, high conjugate water depth and low energy dissipation rate. Finally, a systematic investigation on this SBSWC was preceded by means of theoretical analysis, experimental model and numerical simulation. The main contents and results in this M.S. thesis are listed bellows:1. A theoretical jump equation for calculating the conjugate water depth of hydraulic jump in SBSWC was derived by analyzing momentum equation, in which the inclined angle of jet flow entering the SBSWC was included. The relationship between conjugate water depth and Froude number with different relative shallow water cushion depths (S) has been obtained by employing the derived formula. The results indicated that the depth of shallow water cushion can rather affect the flow pattern in the pool and that conjugate water depth is lower than that in the normal pool with the same Froude number, and it will parabolly decrease with the the depth of the water cushion increasing.2. By comparing the derived Jump Equation of conjugate water depth in SBSWC with the normal one and that obtained by Katakam for case ofβ=1, it was...
