Modeling technology for workshop layout has been studied for a long time. At present there are two categories in this field: one is the mathematical modeling, focusing on the application of various mathematic models and algorithms in the workshop layout modeling; the other is modeling via computer simulation and virtual reality technology. With the development of manufacturing mode, the workshop reconfigurability as well as the frequency of the workshop performance evaluation increases, this makes great demand on the rapid modeling for the workshop layout.This paper points out the disadvantages underlying the present modeling technology based on the analysis and researching about workshop layout modeling in and outside the country. The modeling speed needs to be improved; meanwhile the requirement on the modeling experience should be reduced. These two aspects constitute the reason why the Sand Table (ST) is introduced to the field of workshop layout. The paper first brings forward the idea of ST, and constructs an ST prototype system. A swift workshop layout parameter-gain technology based on image identification is then derived from analyzing the characteristic of the images obtained from ST and the requirement of image identification. The application of related image identification algorithms in the obtaining process of workshop layout parameters is also included to get the central coordinates of the ST model, the position angles and the identification numbers of facility models. The paper also offers an Object-Oriented Petri Net (OOPN) workshop layout model based on the OOPN theory, and a database derives from it accordingly. The model then is connected and integrated with the simulation software eM-Plant through the COM interface provided by eM-Plant. Finally the workshop layout model reversing technology based on ST and Image Identification technology is provided for its validity and effectiveness by reversing two different workshop layout models in the DENFORD FMS training system. A new rapid modeling method for workshop layout modeling has been provided. .
