The breakage of dams makes the study on mechanism of seepage failures of the earth dams to be a question which needs to be resolved immediately. Especially the rapid development of the Concrete Faced Rockfill Dams makes the study more exigent.Although progress has been made on the study of the non-Darcy seepage law of the coarse grain,the system info has not been formed and the non-Darcy seepage law has not been used in the analysis of seepage in real projiects.In this paper,seepage tests have been made on coarse grain with bimodal grain-size-distribution and unimodal grain-size-distribution.The factors that affect the seepage property of coarse grain have been discussed . The rule of seepage failures and the seepage law of coarse grain have been established.The1-D and 2-D non-Darcy seepage models have been established,which are compared with corresponding dacry seepage models。By the study,the following conclusions were concluded:(1)There are two main kinds of seepage failures: piping and soil flow.And the piping can be divided into two kinds ,that are piping developing with the time and piping not developing with the time. Only with low dry density ,the seepage failures of Coarse grain with unimodal grain-size-distribution will be piping developing with the time .(2)The dry density,content of fine grain and non-uniform coefficient affect the seepage property of coarse grain.
