Structural features and abutments stability is on concerned in the design of arch dam. The geological condition of Yuanmanguan RCC double-curvature arch dam of very complex, and there are eight crannies and nine faults.Transerse joints are set very few, even not set in the RCC arch dam, and there is no transerse joint in Yuanmanguan arch dam, but there are two crack directors in it. Regard to the project which comprises complex land form and geological condition, and reciprocity between arch dam and crack directors, 3D non-linear finite element method(FEM) is used to study such research works as stress and strain analysis, stability of dam foundation and abutment, the change itself and effect on arch dam of crack director of Yuanmanguan Hydro-project.1.A program based on Visual Lisp and AutoCAD VBA is designed to generate meshes semiautomatically in the preprocess of FEM. In addition, inquire and modification of every element can be achieved easily, thus greatly increase working efficiency.2.According to the geological conditions of Yuanmanguan project, the arch dam and crack directors, Three-dimensional numerical model is established to simulate the reciprocity between the dam and its foundation.3D non-linear FEM is used to analyze the stress and strain and to appraise the operation state of both the dam and two crack directors under different operation conditions. By overloading the upstream water level and reducing rock strength parameter, the dam foundation (abutment) degradation process is simulated and the damage pattern and paths are determined, and finally the safety factor is determined.
