With the reconstruction of power grid, power cable is applied extensively. The fault, however, occur regularly because of manufacturer defect, mechanical damage, installation quality, insulation aging and so on. It leads a number of losses. How to set fault location rapidly and accurately to reduce outage losses is need to study further. So far there isn't effective method of fault location. In this paper, through investigating many kinds of methods of power cable location, the advantages, weakness and scopes of application of each way are introduced firstly.This paper research the application of diagnostic techniques of power cable fault. On the base of traditional transmission line mode, finite element analysis method is used to make line equal units. Then after considering mutual-inductance between units of finite cable, new wave equation is obtained. Finally time domain response is studied by numerical analysis way.In the examples, low-resistance, high -resistance and open-circuit fault of cable are simulated by using VC++7.0 software. The parameters including cable length, number of unite divided, impulse width, account step and fault location are changed to get different waves. Compare these simulation waves and calculate the distance of fault point. The rules of wave shape are generalized. According to the analysis of simulation graph and practical wave in mass projects, the simulation equation obtained is up to practice. The conclusions are summed to guide the works of field fault location.
