In soft soil areas the pile foundation is often used for the foundation of buildings to ensure their stability or control their settlement. At the present the pile foundation has become a main manner to treat soft foundations.Although pile foundations are applied widely, settlement calculation is one of the difficult problems in the design of pile foundations. The interaction among the piles plays a very important role in the settlement characteristics of pile groups. The interaction among the piles changes not only the value and development of shaft friction resistance, bottom resistance and the distribution of shaft friction resistance of the single pile in the group, but also the stress distribution of soil. The settlement characteristics of pile groups become more complicated than that of a single pile because of the cap-pile-soil interaction. So almost all of the settlement calculation methods of single pile are not applicable to pile groups. The development and application of pile foundations is summarized firstly. Then, the settlement characteristics of pile groups under axial loading are discussed and several kinds of domestic and overseas methods of settlement calculation are introduced. An Ansys model is established and used to analyse the settlements and Axle strength under different conditions, which shows that FEA modeling method is feasible. Then, other methods are introduced to caculate the settlement of pile groups, Comparing with Ansys result, normal methods result and settlement survey, speculate the experience coefficient of pile settlement in such area. Consequently it can play the instruction role in actual projects.
