Rated voltages of urban distribution grid are mainly 10kV or 35kV. With the development of city construction, overhead lines are gradually replaced with underground cables. Despite of lower failure rate, cables are difficult for fault location, which influences the reliability and security.Enhancing automation, service quality and management of distribution grid is also crucial, so fault monitoring and location promptly are worthy of in-depth research. This paper conducts the research on fault location of distribution grid, based on artificial neural networks model.After reading many correlative literatures about cable fault location and comprehending the theory of cable fault location based on artificial neural networks model, the research and experiment of the theory equipment for cable fault location based on artificial neural networks model are carried through. The implementing methods and processes of the theory equipment for cable fault location, including the synchronous sampling by locking frequency and phase, the fault startup of adaptive model, the fault affirming, the training of artificial neural networks model for cable as well as the ascertainment of cable fault location, etc.The hardware circuits of the theory equipment for cable fault location have been designed, including the circuit of synchronous signal forming, A/D circuit, DSP control circuit, CPLD extend circuit and Ethernet circuit, etc.The research and experiment of the theory equipment for cable fault location are done, including an experiment model system for cable fault location, the training of artificial neural networks physical model, and the detecting of cable fault point.
