This paper presents a type of Stingray current engine and develops a research model operating in water channel. The engine sways in running water to change the kinetic energy of the running water to electric energy. The engine working under this theory can absorb the tidal kinetic energy of rivers and oceans. It has many advantages, such as no need to build a dam, simple mechanism, low cost, reliable running and so on. It provides a new way to explore river and ocean tidal energy. The purpose of this paper is to design configuration, control mechanism and control method for the engine and illustrate the working principle of the engine to establish a basis for later studies.In this paper, the hydrodynamic performance of the engine is calculated according to momentum theorem and lifting line theory. A test model which works in water channel is developed and its strength and reliability have been checked. After doing hydrodynamic experiment with the engine model, the experimental data are collected, analyzed and compared to the calculated results to determine the reliability of calculation theory. The theoretical calculation and model test show that the stingray engine can effectively change the kinetic energy of running water into electricity.
