Finite-element study on the ultimate strength of gusset plate connections to slotted tubes and full scale tests on the ultimate strength of the connections are researched in this dissertation.Gusset plate connections to slotted tubes is one type of the composite joint configurations in tubular structures. It can meets in practice. This connection take place of tubular joints and welded hollow spherical joints in some special situation. Analysis of nonlinear finite-element for ultimate strength of gusset plate connections to slotted tubes with ANSYS program are carried out in this dissertation. During the analysis, three non-dimensional parameter is considered: the ratioβof the inserting depth of steel pipe to plate; the ratioγof the length of plate to the width of plate; the ratioτof the width of plate to the thick of plate. The analysis about the influence of this four parameter to the failure model and the ultimate strength of this type of joints is carried out.Tube-plate-spherical joints is a special type of joint when gusset plate connections to slotted tubes is applying in large span structures. Finite-element analysis on the tube-plate-spherical joints is proceeded using the common finite element software ANSYS. During the analysis, three non-dimensional parameters is considered: the ratioδof outer diameter of hollow spherical joint to the thick of spherical; the ratioθof outer diameter of hollow spherical joint to the thick of steel plate; the ratio ? of outer diameter of connected steel pipe to the outer diameter of hollow spherical joint. The analysis about the influence of this three parameter to the failure model and the ultimate strength of this type of joints is carried out.Test study is the most important research method of ultimate strength of tubular joints. Because the size of tubular joints used in practice engineering is always large and the small size one tries a simulation actual conditions very difficult to be accurate, so the full scale tests study is of significance much more. Full scale tests on 3 tube-to-plate joints is carried out in this dissertation. Then the tests result is compared with results of finite-element analysis the difference of them are analyzed. The results of full scale tests in this dissertation can reinforce international database of test.Simple design formula on the ultimate compressive strength of gusset plate connections to slotted tubes is presented basing on the results of finite-element study.
