With the characteristics of smooth flow patterns in the inlet and outlet conduits, less hydraulic loss and high system efficiency, a bulb tubular pump system is especially suitable for pumping stations of the East-Route South-to-North Water Transfer Project. Consequently, it has good application value and developing potential. So far, however, the application at home and abroad of large bulb tubular pump systems is still seldom, as a result, the research work for the hydraulic characteristics of the systems is far not enough. Therefore, more research for the systems is necessary. The results will not only be valuable for Huai-Yin-San-Zhan bulb tubular pumping station, which will be built up very soon, but also well be referenced for other tubular pumping stations of the East-Route South-to-North Water Transfer Project.How to study hydraulic performance and optimum hydraulic design of a bulb tubular pump system, is a problem which need to be resolved first. Currently, the method of model experiment is applied popularly to study hydraulic performance of the system. The method expends a lot and has a long period, and the results of the research are only limited to exterior characteristics of the system lack of interior characteristics. In recent years, along with the development of the theories and technology of CFD, the application of numerical simulation has been more and more widely applied to study flow patterns in the pump system. Under this background, the feasibility and veracity of numerical simulation of 3D turbulence flow to study the bulb tubular pump system are explored in this paper.Using the software of Pro/ENGINEER 2001 and GAMBIT, 3D entities of ZBM791-100 model pump segment and Huai-Yin-San-Zhan prefixing & postposition bulb tubular pump systems are completed respectively. Meanwhile the shapes of impellers and diffusers and the assemble work of all entities are finished satisfactorily.
