When existing building structures need to be strengthened, design professionals usually lack the global concept that analyze and address the effects of strengthening and retrofit on the structural behaviors, or fail to well know the characteristics of strengthening and retrofit, thus not achieving good results after structures have been strengthened and even lowering the global reliability of the strengthened structures.Combined with the case of strengthening and retrofit of cast-in-place frame-wall system with one story underground and fifteen stories' aboveground, a method for building strengthening and retrofit is proposed in this paper as follows. First, the existing structure is analyzed and checked before strengthened and after retrofitted by means of simulation (actually not retrofitted), respectively. Second, according to calculated results, the redistribution of internal forces, the change of structural behaviors and the change of amount, of reinforcement due to local strengthening of structures are studied. Then the optimal design of retrofit schemes for members required of being re-strengthened due to local strengthening is performed. Finally, the strengthened structure is re-analyzed and re-checked based on the change in the sectional stiffness of members after strengthened, thus providing the basis for evaluation the effects of the strengthened structure.
