This prolegomenon introduces the present research status of shape of space structure. The history of applications for free-formed surface technology in space structure is also showed. At the same time, there are summarizations of 3 kind optimization methods. Based on the thought of minimum deformation energy, a new form-finding method, minimum deformation energy optimization method is researched in this paper.Firstly, the paper researches the essential knowledge about curves and surfaces, especially about B-spline curves and surfaces. This knowledge is the groundwork to research minimum deformation energy optimization method, which offers us good understanding about the following text.Shell structure's deformation energy formula is deduced, then, the next important ting is to establish the model of shell structure's minimum deformation energy optimization, then two methods to realize the optimization process is expressed: mathematic method and optimization method based on ANSYS software. At last, same examples are given to demonstrate that shell structure's optimization form finding method is correct and viable.In the next part, membrane structure's deformation energy formula is deduced. In this thesis, in the same way, the model of membrane structure's minimum deformation energy optimization is established. There is some modification with the optimization model referring to some different geometrical restrictions. Then, a detailed calculative flow chart is given. At last, same examples are given, especially, to demonstrate that membrane structure's optimization form-finding method is correct and viable, the author contrast the membrane form-finding result between the method referred in this thesis and the membrane form-finding method based on ANSYS software.
