Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD) has been developing rapidly during the last tens of years. It has been recognized as an economical dam kind that can be widely used. Compare to traditional core type rockfill dams, CFRD has the advantage of less quantities, higher security, more convenient construction, shorter construction period, less cost of work, etc. CFRD appeared later in China than in some other countries. But it has been developing more rapidly in China with higher start level. A large number of CFRD dams have been built in China since 1985, among which there are nearly 40 with dam height over 100m. Although CFRD has high security, integrated monitoring systems are still needed in important projects to monitor real-time working conditions, and ensure CFRD dams work safely.Traditional CFRD monitoring systems are designed and disposed mostly by experience. Monitoring sensors are usually disposed densely in important areas to ensure the reliability of monitoring systems. Such actions can beget redundancy in some areas and deficiency in some others. The cost increase and the reliability of monitoring system decrease. And hidden defects of CFRD dam may appear. In this paper, the author attempts to advance a new theoretical method to monitoring sensor displacement optimization base on FEM and multivariate rational spline theories. At last the author tested the new method on a real CFRD dam.The main processes of the new method provided in this paper are as follows: First, modeling and analyzing CFRD dam based on FEM theories. Working-out the displacement and stress data of CFRD model. Second, realize surface data parametric of the displacement data using program based on multivariate rational spline theories. And working-out correlative mathematic characters of the simulating surfaces. Last, analyze mathematic characters of different simulating surfaces, combine with real conditions of different projects, try to provide a solution to the CFRD monitoring sensors disposal. In the last chapter of this paper, the author selects a representative project----Tianshengqiao 1 CFRD dam as an example, tested the new method to CFRD monitoring sensor displacement optimization provide in the paper.
