With the development and application of GPS based wide area measurement system(WAMS) in power system, some new dynamic stability evaluation methods based ondata observation come to be known, which combines the dynamic mechanism with thecharacteristic of wide-area data. Considering the power angle oscillation process, thepaper firstly analyzes the formation principle of coherent generators identified by therotor angle and the deviation of rotor speed, which are measured and sent up todispatching center from every generator through WAMS. And then, a stability evaluationcriterion and stability degree index based on single machine (group) kinetic energy areconstructed, after the analysis of energy conversion of unbalanced kinetic energy andpotential energy by the single machine energy function with integrated damp factorconsidered. Specially, the criterion is extensible to adapt different complex conditionsfor all kinds of system size and fault. Some system simulation research shows clearadvantage of the method taken by the paper against conventional methods.
