Reinforcing bar corrosion is one of the most important factors which deteriorate durability of concrete structures and members. Steel is prone to corrode because of loss of alkalinity of the cover concrete due to carbonation. Ongoing steel corrosion in concrete leads to cracking of concrete cover and reduction of the bond strength between steel and concrete. And finally, the deterioration of bearing capacity of reinforced concrete members will occur. In accordance with the study process of "mechanical properties of corrosive steel bars—methods of detecting steel corrosion and estimation of corrosion rate— deterioration of mechanical properties of corrosive reinforced concrete members— durability estimation of corrosive concrete structures and members", systematical study of corrosive concrete structures, is summarized by the author as follows: (1) Deterioration of mechanical properties of corrosive steel bars is studied. (2)The nondestructive methods of detecting steel corrosion in concrete are discussed in their practical application, merits and demerits. And the systematical methods are given, which can be used to estimate reinforcement corrosion rate according to the appearance of concrete members. (3)Through analyzing factors leading to deterioration of reinforced concrete structure performance, the author conducts the analytical method on basic members with corrosive steel bars by non-linear finite element simulation, and meanwhile studies the degrading laws in mechanical properties of reinforced concrete beams under various corrosion rates by utilizing finite element software ANSYS. (4)Based on the non-linear finite element analysis results and existing test data, reasonable method is obtained in calculating flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beam with corrosive bars, together with main principles. (5)With the help of above-mentioned analysis results, primary study on durability estimation of corrosive reinforced concrete structure in service is carried on in this paper. And finally, the direction of further research is briefly discussed.
