In practical engineering, some great engineering accident, such as instability of pit, failure of the soil and so on, almost are the progressive failure procedure of localization under plane strain condition that is shear band phenomenon. During a long time, it was a little understanding of the shear band phenomenon. In order to deeply research the shear band phenomenon, a plane strain apparatus was developed, and a series of consolidated undrained plane strain compression tests of Shanghai intact clay, layer-3 very soft slity clay, was carried on. Most of the sample's response during the shearing procedure, such as the stress-strain response, the development of pore water pressure, and the evolution of local lateral non-homogeneous deformation, were recorded. Based on the experimental results, it's helpful to understand the shear band phenomenon in quantity: 1) make out the standard to determine the shear band beginning and the shear band fully formation. 2) Get the full information of the following special points: shear band beginning point, the peak, and the shear band fully formation point. 3) Suggest a strengthen standard with the consideration of localization. In order to know more about the shear band phenomenon, numerical modeling of compression test of the Shanghai intact muddy slity clay, were done by FEM program ADINA. To stimulate the shear band phenomenon, weak element was set in the FEM model. Some things meaningful were got from the modeling. More jobs should be carried on for the future research.
