Fluorine is an element of great environmental interest and fluoride is one of the pollution control species. Combustion of coal is a potential source of fluoride in the atmosphere and environment. In this paper, a series of key problems on the fluoride emission mechanism and conversion process during coal combustion were systemically analyzed and studied by the integration of the theoretical and experiment. The research work content is an important component part of the Nation Natural Science Foundation of China(50476032), subsidized by Postdoctoral Science Foundation of China(2004035555). Firstly, characteristic and harm of fluoride pollution by coal combustion were introduced, the present research situation and some problems of conversion process during coal combustion were summarized. Secondly, based on systems analysis of all kind of fluorine measure method, pyro-hydrolysis — fluoride ion-selective electrode (ISE) method is the most accurate, precise and successful method to the fluorine determination of coal, fly ash and bottom ash. Afterwards, fluorine emission characteristics and mechanism during coal combustion have been studied systemically. The influencing relationship and factors on the fluorine emission have been obtained. The production mechanism and kinematics model of gaseous fluoride during coal combustion have been proved. At last, The conversion process during coal combustion in different industrial and power plant boiler, the distribution in combustion product of coal have been investigated. The mathematics model of fluorine emission in chain grate furnace has been established.
