Safety of arch dam is what engineers are concerned about. With the development of computer , the finite element method has been applied to stress analysis of arch dam gradually. The heterogeneity of dam foundation, the orifices of dam, complicated structure, construction process can be considered conveniently on this method. The finite element method can solve lots of questions which are very difficult on the trial load method, so it has the bright future.But the finite element method gives birth to stress concentration on the dam heel and dam toe , which does not conform to the actual circumstances. Furthermore, its value is easily affected by mesh size, Which bring many difficulties on the stress appraise and the confirmation of control stress. Prof. Zhu Bofang and Prof. Fu Zuoxin present equivalent stress method, which provides an effective way for practical application of finite element method. But how to solve dam body equivalent stress reasonably is still a problem.Prof. Li Tongchun presents an improved method for analysis of arch dam equivalent stress. On the assumption that the normal and shear stresses in the directions of arch and beam accord with the bilinear distribution in the plane elements of arch and beam sections, a formula is developed for calculation of the equivalent nodal stress from the constraining inner force along the sections. Furthermore, equations for solution of the equivalent stress and formulas for calculation of the main stress in the upstream face and downstream face are derived on the assumption of linear distribution of arch stress and hoop stress. On the base of this theory, the author develops a program to solve dam body equivalent stress. Example proves that the program is right.In this paper, the finite element method is applied on the stress and displacement analysis of Long Mentang arch dam. Especially, stage construction of deadweight is taken into account. And then, the author uses the program to solve dam body equivalent stress.
