The sealing device is one of the most important parts of gate, and the structure pattern of the water seal is the key to sealing water. There are certain research and design experience about expansion water seal which is often used in high head gate. However, some problem such as slipping and leaking water in the wing of the water seal often influence its age and result of use. Studying water seal involves material nonlinear geometry nonlinear and contact nonlinear, routine test and linear numerical calculation are difficult to analyse stress and deformation of rubber quantitatively. Furthermore, the test research expenditure is very high and the test model is limited. Regarding nonlinear finite element as theoretical foundation, the paper combines water seal of Pubugou station's radial gate and has carried on extensive and careful research on the section form of the expansion water seal through ANSYS software, which can provide valuable reference to designing.Studying the influence of friction, the paper concludes that it's better to apply bigger coefficient of friction on the wing and top of the seal while apply smaller coefficient on the side. Some measures can improve the effect to seal water, such as digging out one arc at the bottom, widening or heighten the head, stuffing armor plate in the rubber or sticking nylon cloth on the head rubber.According to the principle of selecting water seal, the paper draws a conclusion that No 9 is the best section in the 9 typical wing from considering their applications and coMParing their deformation, stress and contact pressure. Also the paper coMPares the compression' quantity, contact width and contact pressure of the head rubber, and then educes No 15 is the best one of the 15 head seals.In order to know the water seal rubber's variety of stress and deformation, the paper analyses its displacement distribution status with vectograph, and protracts some elements' displacement-time relation curve, stress and strain-time relation curve and contact pressure-time relation curve.One result that the distance between the seal and panel is 30mm is feasible through calculating the rubber's Y displacement without panel, its X maximum displacement with different hydraulic pressure of reservoir and different distance between the seal and the panel. And another shows the compression' quantity, the contact pressure, the contact width and the side contact pressure of head increase nonlinearly along with the increase of water pressure. Furthermore, the increasing trend of the side's contact pressure subsides while water pressure is greater than 0.6MPa The fourth result is that the compression' quantity increase nonlinearly along with the contact pressure. Trough sealing simulation, the last result indicates that the hydraulic pressure of reservoir can seal water well.
