The locomotive gauge and the structure approaching gauge are the basic technical rules on railway transport in China. The railway-tunneling gauge is one kind of structure approaching gauges on railway. In order to ensure there is enough room for trains passing tunnels safely, any other structure or equipment cannot exist except trains and the necessary structure or equipment. With the fast development of technology on electronic and computer for recent years, single-chip processor has been applied widely in every field of society. So doing research and designing an intelligent detector for the railway gauge has profound influence on the railway transport's safety in China.This article, combined with the practical need, disserts the principle, method and process of the railway-tunneling gauge detection, and according to this designs an intellectualized locomotive-carried instrument for detecting the railway-tunneling gauge, which is based on the system of AT89C51 single-chip processor and includes mechanized, electronic and optical technology. The article focuses on describing the designs of the hardware and software of the detecting system for the tunneling gauge in detail. On hardware design, it mainly describes the peripheral devices' principle and choice of the detecting system, the division of the hardware function module, and introduces the typical application of the system expansion chips in detail. On software design, it gives the description on the design of the installation software of the tunnel-gauge-detecting device and the detecting software. And then, the chief anti-interfere technology on the system's hardware and software design is detailed. This improves the system's ability on anti-interfere. After the system design accomplished, an experimental system is set up with the designed tunnel-gauge-detecting system and the relevant measurements are carried out. The static and dynamic errors of system are gathered through the analysis on experimental data, they are respectively within 0.3% and 2.0%. The systemprecision meets the requirement on the gauge detecting of railway tunnel, and this proves the feasibility of my. design on some degree.At the end of this article, it points the system's disadvantages that can be improved and prospects the further research of the topic.
