The Pearl River is a big river in the south of China. The precipitation in its collective area is rich, with the amount of 1475.0 mm in annual average, ranking on top among Chinese seven large river basins. Its water is following the Changjiang River as the second largest with amount of 338. 5 billion m~3 However, the temporal and spatial distribution of precipitation is uneven in the Pearl River basin, while the population, land utilization and economic situation vary differently, the water shortage is also a big problem. Because the rapid economic development in recent years, the water demand in agriculture, industry and habitants of the area increased and the water supply cannot meet it. On other hand the water pollution caused by the economic development is enlarging the water shortage, and the disaster lost caused by flood and drought increased at the same time. However, the water utility is not developed optimistically, the water shortage is worse and becoming more complicated.Under the guidance of new spirit of water management, more and more attention is putting to the demand of ecological environment. So it is necessary to adjust the water utilization policy and the water resources management to solve the prominent water utility problems. This paper analyzed the water quantity and quality and its present utilization in the Pearl River. The discussions are concerning to some important districts of the basin and the correlated conclusions and suggestions are raised.
