The area of deserts and desertified lands in our country has reached up to 1,689,000 square kilometers, accounting for 17.6% of the territorial land area. They are mostly dispersed over the western provinces like Xinjiang, Qinghai,Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, there are extensive space, few human beings and worse natural conditions in desert, Although rich mineral resources like coat, natural gas and petroleum are contained in these vast deserts, the exploitation and utilization of these resources, as well as the development of the regional economy, are influenced and restricted directly by the reasons like inconvenient traffic conditions .With the establishment and execution of the strategy of Western Development in China, the traffic is increasing rapidly. The problem to be solved first in a large number of newly-built highways and railway in desert within medium and short term is how to prevent the sand damage and summary of the technology on roadbed construction of traffic route in desert are very necessary.This article analyzes the regular pattern of wind-blown sand movement and the physical mechanic properties of desert soil theoretically and systematically. Based on this analysis, combined with years of practical experience, on the basis of a great deal of data research and engineering investigation, with the field observation and laboratory data from scientific research institutes as reference, and after analyzing and inducing, this article summarizes the fundamental points in the engineering and construction of roadbed in desert from several aspects, highway and railway location engineering, reasonable forts of roadbed cross sectionin desert, construction of sand control system for roadbed body and both sides of it ,basic main point of summarizing the regional roadbed of desert and designing and constructing.According to the theory of wind-blown sand movement, this article introduces the main method and means to treat roadbed sand damage: "Consolidating, obstructing, transporting and guiding" That is, to control the subaerial wind speed under the threshold wind speed for sand moving by increasing the surface roughness, or to increase the compaction of surface sand layer to improve the wind resistance ability of the sand surface—this is sand consolidating;to block sand blown by the wind and cut off the sand movement path between the sand source and the traffic route—this is sand obstructing;to increase the subaerial sand-driving wind speed and bring about non-stacking conditions by changing the geometrical shape of the roadbed and its surrounding or decreasing the roughness, which makes the sand-driving wind pass through the roadbed surface smoothly and not bring about wind burying —this is sand transporting;to change the airflow direction with wind guiding engineering facilities, and guide the sand carried by the sand-driving wind to change its sedimentation site, thus make traffic facilities avoid damaged by the sand—this is sand guiding.At the same time, the treatment principle of "Take mechanical sand consolidation to traffic passage clearing as the base;take chemical sand consolidation as the ancillary method, and take vegetative sand control and the foundation and recovery of ecological balance as the ultimate objective." is provided.
