Being a new material, Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) has a good application prospect in structure engineering;it also offers a new approach for the structure vibration control. Hence, the study on the SMA dampers and the structure vibration control with these dampers has considerable value.This thesis presents a study and analysis of SMA damper and its application forearthquake resistant and strengthening of the ancient tower through theory analysis,experiment study and computer simulation, referring to the study and application of SMA instructure vibration control. First, the study and application of SMA in structure vibrationcontrol are reviewed and summarized. The following is the material performance tests of akind of austenitic superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy wire. The energy dissipationcapability of the wire and the influence of strain amplitude, loading frequency, as well asnumber of cycles on working performance of the SMA wire and so on are investigated. Basedon the test, the writer designs a tensioned SMA damper, sets up its theoretical modelaccording to the constitutional relationship of SMA, and gets its hysteretic curve throughfinite element computer simulation. Then this paper's background project-Guangzhou GuangTower is analyzed in static and dynamic state, especially the control effectiveness by applyingSMA dampers to this tower. It is shown that this type of SMA damper developed in thisproject is very effective to mitigate earthquake responses of structures and has a goodapplication prospect in the earthquake resistant and strengthening of the the similar antienttower. Finally the seismic design principles and methods for structure with energy dissipaters are studied initially.
