The structural reliability theory is being applied to every project field progressively as a kind of advanced and effective theory.The gantry hoist is the fundamental equipment of hydraulic and hydroelectric engineering. Therefore, it's important to enhance monitoring and controlling of the gantry hoist and to strengthen the working reliability. At present, the design and the check of the gantry hoist still adopt the allowable stress method.There are important realistic meanings to probe into the application of the reliability theory in this field.This paper has introduced the basic theories of reliability.According to the characteristic of the gantry hoist of hydraulic and hydroelectric engineering.this paper has also analysed the failure mode of its metal structure, established the analysis mode how to calculate its reliability.According to the characteristic that the gate is the operation target of the hoist, the random variable influencing the reliability of the metal structure of the gantry hoist is determinded,connected to the lifting force of the gate.Then.the distribution and statistic of these random variables are analysed.Take project of Danjiangkou as an example ,this paper has probed into the application in the metal structure of the gantry hoist with the reliability theory. In this course three-dimensional finite element method is used to calculate the stress and deformation of the metal structure.The influence coefficient method is adopted to obtain the expression between the load and the offect ,and form the limit state equation of all failure mode.Finally.corresponding reliability indices are obtained with the JC method under truncated distribution.A new approach and method is provided to the safety evaluation about the metal structure of the gantry hoist. This research has provided a direct reference for the control of the hydraulic and hydroelectric hoist.
