Power system stability plays an important role in the safe operation of network, which will cause enormous economic losses and calamitous consequence when it is destroyed. There have been lots of bitter lessons existed in the world. In recent years, along with the development of the electric undertaking of our county, the expanding of the power system grid structure ,the forming of the power system of the large-scale weak connection,and the popularization of the fast automatic voltage excitation regulator which takes on the negative damping effect, the requirements for power system stabilizers (PSS )are urgent day by day.This paper focuses on the resarch and development of the multivariable digital power system stabilizers.In the paper we introduced the origination of the power system stability and its principle mathematic analysis method firstly. Then the design of software and hardware on the power system stabilizers is illuminated in detail.During the design of the PSS, a high performance chip,DSP(digital signal processor) is adopted, whose type is TMS320F2812. This device is 32 bit fixed-point digital signal processor,works in 150MHZ.This ensures that the system has the high numberic operation capability,and the processor also supports all kinds of digital signal processing algorithms.At the same time,the program realizes all the PSS functions.And the software is programed with C and assembler language,whitch ensures that the software has clear structure and the short development cycle,at the sametime,the hign efficiency can be obtained. Moreover, the multivariable digital power system stabilizers can adopt the different conditions and requirements, the configuration is flexible, convenient,that can meet the demand of many kinds of power system.
