Interconnected power system provides higher securities and balances energy sources among areas. But some areas' performance maybe not meet expectations because of different capabilities or selfish performances. So it is necessary to propose standards, or called criteria, to assess and restrict control area performance. The purpose is to estimate area operation performance and punish opportunistic areas.North American Electric Reliable Council (NERC) adopted the standard of series A (A1/A2) and series CPS (CPS1/CPS2) respectively in 1973 and 1996. Interconnected power system operation in North American is assessed by CPS now while ours is assessed by A. As time goes on, it appears that the standard of series A has been showing more and more disadvantages. But standard of series CPS is developed in the North American background, it is unwise to copy them blindly or mechanically, because interconnected power system of China is very different from that of North American from several aspects such as control structure of interconnected power system , level of automatization , administration system and so on. It is supposed to carry out a deep investigation of standard CPS in order to find how to make use of standard CPS reasonably in China. Moreover, due to the particular characteristic of China interconnected power system, a new standard that more suitable is needed.Analyzing standard CPS and establishing new standards demands mastery of power system's operation performance. One of the feasible methods is to analyze data collected in the process of operation. Because the real-time data is actual record and reflection of the system.Basing on original data collected in the process of Northeastern Power System operation in March 2005, combining the operation circumstance, applying several statistical analysis methods, adopting Statistical Analysis System (SAS) as analysis tools, this paper discusses the Basic Statistical Measures of every variable, describes rules and trends of the variables, does research on auto correlation function. In addition, cross correlation between the variables has also been paid attention to and relations between variables are pointed out, then conclusions can be drawn about how variable influences each other and circumstance of electric power system operation can be indicated. The conclusions, on the one hand, can approve general knowledge about power system operation, on the other hand, explore a new field that hasn't been referred to before, catch internal relationship between data, indicate circumstance of electric power system operation. At the same time, according to analysis of data collected in March 2005, Northeastern Power System and its control areas are assessed. This study, not only shows relations and various laws between variables, but also provides reference supporting for next step of research, such as electricity forecasting , electricity price forecasting , load forecasting and the like. Most important, it provides chance to know better of circumstance of electric power system operation and this is essential for analyzing the existing control performance criteria, setting new criteria and working out control strategy.
