This thesis is about the pattern of certain street space which is between the edge of roads and the walls of buildings, including the public pavement for citizens and private field belonging to buildings. This is not only the right place where people enjoy city life, but also the place where the city displaces her vitality. But people haven't paid enough attention to this space. Though our government is trying hard to beautify the city image by glorifying the elevation of the buildings, the most important place where people enjoy street life is neglect. Because of some certain reasons, this space doesn't go as harmonious as we have expected.By the investigation and analysis of several special street mainly in Shang Hai and the outcome of the works of experts both here and abroad, I tried to find out the appropriate patterns for good street elements according to the criterion of human behavior psychology. These street elements include the property line, the width of footpath, the parking lots for cars and bicycles, virescence, wall, sun, sitting space, booth, bus station, washroom, the street establishments, zebra crossing, crossover and underground. The street, which will be more friendly and more attractive by using the good patterns, could benefit inhabitances and passers-by, and the buildings can obtain well-being and safety by more people on the streets. On the other hand, I also tried to find out bad patterns which are dangerous to the existence of street. Those evil patterns should be avoided at any time. The thesis also tries to find out the cause of formation of the patterns, and how they affect each other and work together. By using those good patterns, avoiding the causes of bad ones and modifying certain patterns already existing, we can better the street space and street life.
