As one of the five biggest transport industries including railway, highway, air, shiptransporting, pipeline transport industry plays more and more important role in theeconomic construction and the industries of national defense.Due to the increase of age of pipelines, the detriment, defect during construction,corrosion, the coating of pipeline is severely invalidated in China. The subsequentaccidents, such as break and perforation, not only affect the normal production butcause great losses of energy and economy and it can even lead to pollution toenvironment and considerable losses of lives and properties of people, so the buriedpipeline safety detection is very important. On the one hand, currently although thereare many methods and instruments for detecting the coating defects of buriedpipelines, but the detection technology and instruments are still backward in China,most of which have low precision and cannot be operated easily. CIPS detectiontechnology is one of the best coating detecting technologies in the world and is thegood example of portable instruments detection that has high efficiency. China hasjust introduced and used the foreign CIPS instruments two years ago. Thedevelopment of domestic CIPS instruments is still in initial stages. On the other hand,the traditionary methods of pipeline defaults nondestructive testing usually take timeand give a lot of trouble, so they can't meet the need of long distance testing. Asrising technologies in the field of nondestructive testing, ultrasonic guided waves,modal acoustic emission and stress wave technology can make up for the deficiencyof the the traditionary methods and detect pipeline economically, expediently andeffectively. The dometic research is in initiative stage.This paper introduced the pipeline/ground potential distributing model oflong-transferred pipeline, analyzed that coat defaults can be located according to thepipeline/ground potential curve, and analyzed the IR drop and how to eliminate it bymethod of switching electricity instantaneously;It introduced the principle andmethod of CIPS detection technology and researched its details;based on it, a set ofburied pipeline coating defect fast detector was developed using CIPS technology,which included hand-detector and data management system based on WINDOWS. Itintroduced the theory of propagation of guided-waves in pipes and the generatedmethods;introduced the application of ultrasonic guided waves testing technology inlong distance pipeline detection, including generated method of single modalguided-wave and the details of testing technology.
