Reactive power has close contacts with power system stability, ATC, voltage of the system etc. Because reactive power can't transmit remotely, it should try one's best to balance in the each area. The reactive compensation has important influence on the security and economical operation of power system in the substation. One of the widest used reactive compensation is shunt capacitor.However, it has questions on design disposition and operation in the actual application. It results in low operation rate, large idle capacity even harmonic enlargement resonance which leads to the low economic benefits of reactive compensator even affects economic, security and stability of the electric power system. So it is necessary to discuss how shunt capacitor is safe and economic use in substation. The theory of shunt capacitor operation and its rules has been analyzed in this paper. The way of capacitor division and the total reactive capacity of compensation under the various kinds of limited conditions recommended have been discussed. The advantage of equal groups is described especially its development in the future and the security guaranteed of the operation such that surge, overvoltage have been fit with the request and there are not harmonic enlargement and resonance , etc. The way of capacitor division and the total reactive capacity of compensation focus on the balance and optimization of substation. On the basis of the theoretical analysis and calculation , the analysis and model of 10kV shunt capacitor in the Yibin Longtou regional power system have been discussed. Thecapacitors can reliably operate according to the control law stipulated in advance through calculating and simulation ,it doesn't have big surge, overvoltage harmonic enlargement ,it improve the economy of operation to a certain extent, and it proved the exactness, feasibility of reactive compensation and groups correspondingly each transformer. This theory and method this can realize reactive optimization disposition of whole area power system, and can realize reactive optimization disposition of some substation, it has good opening and certain practical or reference value in the practical application of the project.
