Nowadays there are more vehicle crash accidents than before, how to improve vehicle passive safety and protect the passengers form injury is an urgent problem, which should be solved as soon as possible. Because of its different energy preserving method and driving method form traditional vehicle, the electric vehicle has some special potential troubles, such as high voltage injury, dangerous gases and battery's explosion. These troubles may cause severe danger to the passengers in crash accidents.Electric vehicle's potential safety problems studied by others before have been summarized in this article. And based on this, the battery box was selected to study in this article, which is the key structure sustaining the batteries. This is because batteries' disposing mode and mounting position are very important to EV safety, a badly designed battery box can't restrict the battery system properly especially in EV crash accidents. This may cause some danger related to battery system.The fifth generation rhomboid vehicle's 3D model was developed in this article. The nonlinear dynamic explicit FEM code was utilized to study and improve the crashworthiness of the rhomboid vehicle's battery boxes. Based on the optimized battery boxes, a more integral rhomboid vehicle FEM model was built. It was modeled with 102,109 nodes and 109,834 elements, including beam, shell, solid and spring elements. The whole vehicle consists of battery boxes, chassis, tires, driving and transmitting system. The highest frequent accidents, including frontal impact, side impact and rear impact, were simulated in order to study the rhomboid vehicle's crashworthiness. Some useful conclusion was summarized from the simulation results. At last some measures were taken to improve the rhomboid vehicle's crashworthiness. All these work in this article will provide a guideline for developing a safer rhomboid vehicle.
