The incorporation of gradient-index (GRIN) material into optical systems offers novel and practical solutions to lens design problems, and infuses new vitality into the development of optical communications and optical information systems. However, widespread use of gradient-index optics has been limited by poor correlation between gradient-index designs and the refractive index profiles produced by ion exchange between glass and molten salt. The density of ion satisfy the thermodynamics covariance regulation, it is confirmed by the theory and experiment that the ideal distributions is difficult to get by one step ion-exchange.Two kinds of methods are put forward to improve the quantity of GRIN-rod lenses: multi-step ion exchange and heat treatment. The boundary conditions are changed purposely to control the refractive index profile in multiple-step diffusion. The glass sample is alternated between ion exchange with a molten salt bath and annealing. The time of each diffusion step and the salt composition can be used to exert control the index profile.The aberration theory and the optical properties uniformity problems are studied in theory.
