Automated Mechanical Transmission (AMT) based on the Manual Transmission and dry clutch makes the vehicle start and shift automatically, which is done by the action of electrohydraulic servomechanism controlled by Transmission Control Unit(TCU). Because of the high transferring efficiency, low cost and easiness to manufacture, Automated Mechanical Transmission (AMT) plays an important role in the family of Automatic Transmission. With the increasing demands for improving oil efficiency and decreasing exhausted gas more and more people realize the importance and the necessity to develop the AMT system. Series of the products have been equipped in some types of vehicles by some well-known automobile corporations recently worldwide. As we all know, there are so many manual transmission plants in China , so AMT system is much more suitable to Chinese situation than any other kinds of automatic transmission (i.e. AT and CVT), the prospect of AMT market in China is great and prosperous. In August 1998, Santana 2000 equipped with AMT system which was developed by Hydraulic Mechanical Transmission Institute (HMTI) Jilin University (the former Jilin University of Technology)passed the national certification. The experts concluded that this research was advanced internationally. This means that AMT has been fully developed into the commercial stage. Now, some vehicle corporations are developing the AMT technology in China, but the technology is still not very mature and they aren't able to produce a real product. This paper is carried out combining the project"The research on technology of Automated Mechanical Transmission on JIEFANG truck"of Research and Development Center of the First Automobile Corporation of china( i.e. FAW), which is the first time to try to equip AMT system on truck in China. Focusing on the research of technology about AMT system, the paper's main contents include several points followed. 1,At first the development history and the present condition of AMT home and abroad are introduced briefly. AMT technology is an important part in the field of vehicle electronic technology. Later the usual structure of AMT is introduced and the merits and shortcomings of the automatic transmission are analyzed in general. At last, the main research contents are confirmed. 2,The study on power train properties. The work of obtaining the stable property of diesel engine by experiment and analyzing the dynamic property of engine are the bases of the study of engine controlling system; The clutch's disengagement and engagement properties and wear abrasion property gained by experiments and the torque transferring property calculated by the experiment data are the bases to build up the clutch controlling regulations; The operating force and distance of the shifting handle of transmission are gained by experiments, too. The results above provide some basic parameters to design the action mechanisms of clutch and the transmission. In a word, this part provides the power train properties associated with the AMT system, which provides the foundation to control the power train and the vehicle. 3 ,The establishment of the clutch controlling rules. Cutch controlling technology is the most difficult part in the AMT system and at the same time it is the key technology to realize the automation of transmission. Firstly, the vehicle dynamic principles during the engagement process of clutch are fully analyzed. And then the frictional work and the impact degree are brought, which are the two main evaluating targets of the clutch performance, the former is to evaluate the life of clutch, the later is to evaluate the comfortable feeling during the engagement of the clutch; Clutch engagement process and the influence to the evaluating indexes of the process has been analyzed systematically in order to obtain high engagement performance. On the basis of former theoretical preparation the ideal clutch engagement controlling rules are established. Secondly, the way to apply the clutch engagement controlling rules is discussed, and the proper controlling logic for clutch precise control is selected as well, the simulation of clutch performing mechanism motion has been done.
