Xi'an is not only a prototype of the historic city in China, but also a well-known cultural center in the world. However, the globalization of technology, the overwhelming urbanization and the emergence and rapid rise of the real estate market interrupt the evolution of local built forms. Xi'an's local identity fade away, and there have great changes on taditional city space. Therefore, an essential question has been raised as to how to preserve and develop Xi'an's city historical identity in the process of urban construction.Along with the new era's coming, the urban development enters urban renewal period and the rhythm of urban life is becoming faster in our country. As a very important role in our city, urban leisure space becomes an integrant outdoors site of urban life. Traditional cultural is the most special and charming content of the city. The design of urban leisure space should consider the factor radically. The article accords to this and take Xi'an Big Wild Goose Pagoda around for instance to analyse the design of urban leisure space.Historical surrounding include historical entity and historical cultural information of the entity. The significance of the study is to think much of traditional cultural and develop new use of historical site by harmonizing with surroundings. The study researches the basic problem of the design from the two points of view, one is the basic requirement of people to the urban leisure space, and the other is the modern landscape architecture. From studing the urbanleisure space around Xi'an big wild goose pagoda and analyzing the practice, put forward the basic ideal that how to design urban leisure space in historical surrounding.
