With the development of electric industry, the scale of power system in China expands rapidly and its structure becomes more complicated. HV transmission line protection with higher performance is urgently demanded. At first, this paper generalizes the history and trend of relay protection. And then discusses the design principles of new type microprocessor-based relay protection of HV transmission line. Furthermore, the structure of protection system and configuration of functions are described in detail. The supervision and analysis software system for HV transmission line relay protection is researched and developed to meet demands of modern relay protection operation. The trend of relay protection enhances the importance of communication. The paper analyzes the global communication design of the new protection system. IEC 60870-5-103 is researched and applied successfully in communication between the equipment and software system. The protocol is identified with full information and widely extended. The software system is developed to realize the perfectly supervising, management, recording, data analyzing and friendly HMI. Construct of the system is modularized, and fully meeting demands of system application. Also, protection operation process analysis is realized in the system. And the design of the function realization is elaborated, including graph-module integrative designation, logical element database, topological graph drawing. Dynamic and visual GUI is offered to meet user needs. At the end of this dissertation, the main results of the research are summarizes. The further work is pointed out as well.
