The fracturing problem of concrete dams directly influences the safety of hydropower station. Concrete dams can suffer considerable deterioration as a result of freezing and thawing. Taking into account of the changes of atmospheric temperature, the interpretation of the mechanisms of concrete pier crack by mechanical and numerical models was presented in the paper. The temperature fields and stress fields of concrete dam pier were computed by making use of finite element method. Numerical computation shows that the thermal stress in the concrete pier may excess the tensile strength of concrete. A study concerning the application of some repair techniques on damaged concrete pier was proposed. The strengthening techniques had been performed at Fengman concrete dams, which include the pre-stressed anchoring cables, grout injection, and coating method. The practical application shows that the proposed measures are more effective and improve the ability of anti-flood and integrity.
