Compared to other machine types, switched reluctance motor (SRM) offers an excellent balance between cost, reliability, power density and high speed capacity. Now it widely applies to starter/generator(S/G) system for aviation and automobile, and has great potential. It is much necessary to establish an accurate and practical model to analyze SRM characteristics. MATLAB is one of the most mightiest sofewares which has strong matrix and mathematics computation ability. One of its module called SIMULINK is very popular in motor modeling. Presently there exist two methods modeling for SRM in use of MATLAB on the whole in domestic. One is programming by M files while the other one is based on linear inductance model or approximate linear inductance model. But they do not take full advantage of MATLAB/SIMULINK and the precision of the model is not well. This paper describes an original non-linear model by MATLAB/SIMULINK in which the motor parameters can be changed easily. Firstly, SRM inductance function L (i , θ )and flux linkage function ψ (i , θ ) are derived from ANSYS which is used for electromagnetic field analysis. Secondly, the non-linear inductance model and non-linear flux model of switched reluctance starter/generator are finished by MATLAB. Based on the latter, the start characteristic of SRM is studied comprehensively. Finally, on the basis of academic research, we completed the starter/generator stand of test and experimented on a sample motor and then experiment waveforms are obtained which verified the simulation model. In this paper, we also simulate several fault states of SRM .Some of the fault states experiment results are given in the paper. It proves that SRM has good fault tolerance performance.
