Reactive power optimization is a large scale nonlinear optimization problem with a large number of variables and terms. According to these characteristics, a new hybrid genetic algorithm using chaos for globally optimization solution has been presented to use in VAR optimization. Based on the genetic algorithm (GA)'s calculation, this hybrid algorithm introduces chaos search into GA to optimize the individuals which have better fitness, especially the best ,and to lead the population to evolve again and again. Taking the advantage of the ergodicity ,this hybrid algorithm solves the problem that the single GA has difficulty in finding the best and accelerates the search of GA when the solution is near to the best effectively. According to the theory of this hybrid algorithm, the corresponding software is also given and applied to the Ward-Hale 6 bus system and the IEEE-30 bus system. The validity and efficiency are confirmed by the numerical results.
