In modern life, the building energy consumption occupies a very big specific ratio in the gross total consumption, and the air conditioning energy consumption accounts for nearly 50% of it according to the statistics. Variable air volume (VAV) system is the air conditioning system that can adjust the supply air volume to adapt the load change and demand of the condition zone. Opposite in other air condition modes, VAV system has advantages in economizing, operating management and maintenance. VAV system is applicable to the building which system load has a large range, so it can be used in office building. Adopting VAV system in office building is predominant in developed countries, such as Europe, USA and Japan.It can be discovered that there are rarely domestic related research of VAV system energy consumption operating in office buildings (especially supply air side energy consumption condition) by investigating the application of VAV system in china. This paper analysis the energy saving mechanism of frequency converted regulating speed ventilator, and some energy consumption computing methods of supply air filter in VAV system. Energy consumption dynamic modulation software-EnergyPlus is used to help analysis the supply air side energy consumption in VAV system. Basic circumstance and modulation principal of EnergyPlus are introduced. The construction model and HVAC model are built, exampled with a standard layer of office building in Shen Zhen. Then we simulated the supply air side dynamic energy consumption with EnergyPlus, and analyzed the data collecting from the simulation. We made a conclusion that supply air side of VAV system can save17.62% energy annually compared with constant air volume (CAV) system. Finally, this paper analysis the energy saving mechanism of VAV system. This paper can be used as a reference for adopting VAV system in office buildings.
