Abstract/Summary:
This paper briefly introduces buckling characteristics of U-shaped bellows subjected to bending simulated by the Finite Element method, and brings forward a finite element calculation method to this application. In this paper three-dimensional parameterized model of bellows and advisable meshing was discussed based on the standard of U-shaped bellows. The following conclusions were drawn through analysis: 1) for reinforced bellows the stress intensity in crests is the maximum; 2) maximal stress intensity approximately is linear with wall thickness, normal diameter, arc radius; 3) columnar buckling and buckling in plane always happen at the same time, with the wave number increased, and columnar buckling is more possible than buckling in plane; 4) when there is compressive stress, the buckling will happen more easily; 5) for the perfect model discussed in this paper, when only subjected to bending, there is no possibility to buckling failure in the elasticity stage. 6) A primary formula to calculate the buckling critical load is put forward, when U-shaped bellows only subjected to bending, and will be discussed for the future. All these conclusions offer important reference basis for wreck of bellows subjected to bending in engineering, and the method in this article can make up the shortage of buckling formulation in the expansion joint standard at present.
