The primary brake equipment of locomotives is a kind of mechanical equipment used to speed down the locomotives, there are 12 or 20 this kind of equipment on each locomotive. The failure of this equipment will bring on accidents or deviation of wheels, which is dangerous to the transportation on locomotives. So the detection of unit brake is important and essential.At the present time, it is still a virgin field in the detection of unit brake on locomotives. Based on this actuality, we have designed a system to detect the working state of the locomotive unit brake, the electric control part involved (the technology of embedded Linux) is the focus and hotspot inside and outside of the country, so this context consists of two parts: the design of hardware, the design of software (consists of uClinux embbed operating system and application software). The design of hardware and software is the emphases of this paper, the hardware circuit board which has an ARM core-S3C44B0 is designed for the special situation and use, for the locoman it is easy to operate and it has a friendly interface. The application software is designed on the embedded operating system-uClinux, it is more complicated than the software which is not base on the operating system, but it has more functions than the latter, furthermore it is steadier when running, and it is easier to design when the operating system has many API functions to use. This text reflected development approach and procedure of the general embedded system during finishing the design of this system, meanwhile it has certain reference meanings to the embedded systematic designer.
