The fluid pressure pulse and flow-noise in water piping system decreased the operation safety of piping system and hiding ability of submarines. One of the effective solutions to suppress the noise radiation is to install a silencer in the water piping system. The present study employed the numerical simulation softwares SYSNOISE and CFX to investigate the noise attenuation (transmission loss) and the flow dynamic (pressure drop) characteristics of water silencers, separately. The FEM predictions of transmission loss are compared with the one-dimensional analytical solutions and boundary element results to verify the accurate of FEM for acoustic analysis of water silencers. The effect of geometry on the acoustic attenuation of water silencers is investigated in detail. The predictions of resistance loss using CFX for two configurations of silencers are compared with experimental results, and the relative error is within 5%. Then the resistance loss characteristics is analyzed for the different configurations of water silencers.
