With the rapid increasing of train speed and the extensive laying of electric railway, the working environment of insulators used in the roof of high speed electric power locomotive engine is more diversified, and the requirement for insulator is also more harsh. In recent years, the accident caused by flashover and turnning off become more and more frequent and serious. For meeting the safety of electric locomotive which runs under every operating conditions, this paper studies on the polymeric composite insulator used in the roof of high speed electric power locomotive engine.On the basis of researching all kinds reasons of accident caused by insulators used in the roof of high speed electric power locomotive engine, the Imported insulator sample was analysed with semi-quantitative spectral analysis , spectrophotometer and so on, the components and its content of the inorganic filler; the organic component and its content were got with DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) material burning test extraction test pyrolysis and GC/MS, and the dielectric characteristic of insulator were also tested. Referring to the import sample, we research the insulator formulation and production technology independently. Combine the result of theoretical research of resistance to feculence and icing flashover by optimizing the design of insulator structure, construct and electric field; testing the behavior of new-type insulators such as flash condition depending on much experiments; combining a series of technological measures taking the pattern test and the actually load application, for example, it can reach scientific goal prearranged and achieve the new-type insulator used in the roof of high speed electric power locomotive engine, which has very good mechanical performance good insulating behavior and well resistance to feculence and icing flashover. This insulator increases the climbing distance, and improves the machinery and electric strength, it also improves the ability to anti-feculence and moist.Moreover, it can improve the ice and flash condition of insulator used in the roof of high speed electric power locomotiveengine, and resolve the difficult technological problem of reducing weight and shake and the machinery impact strength under high-speed. The results of pattern test and application on actually loads indicate that all most technical factors is qualified and the performance are good. It can substitute the import insulators successfully.Currently, this new-type insulator has already been generalized on the whole railway, it creates a lot of economic and social benefits. The research and exploitation of this new-type insulator have reached international level simultaneously, and filled the domestic gap of this technology.
