With the development of modern computer technology, relay engineers are paying more and more attention to computer-aided protective relay setting calculation to release the manual labor intensity. To meet the requirement, a new visual software with GUI (graphical user interface) and database management support used for protective relay setting calculation in electric power system is studied at full length in this paper and some calculation results are presented as well.At the beginning, the necessity and significance of the development of this comprehensive software for visual protective relay setting calculation is analyzed, and then the study history and future in this field is introduced.Subsequently, the method of graph theory used in the software to solve the optimal coordination ordering for directional relays in complex multi-loop system is described and some researches are given: to search the minimal break points set to determine the start point of the setting calculation, the primary/backup pairs between the piecewise relays and the coordinating order in relay setting, etc.In succession, a general introduction to the structure and main functions of the software is given, and then the paper also introduces the key relay setting parts of the program, including both fault analysis module and setting value calculation module. Moreover, manual intervention problems are presented especially.On the basis of all of the above, the paper lays much emphasis on the development method and procedure of database management system of the software according to the study on the application of database technique in setting calculation software, and describes its general structure, data table design .of different type and graphic parameters management in detail. Moreover, the application of visual design technique with the OOP idea in the software is presented in detail, and intuitionistic graphic operation is realized via a friendly user interface and a multifunctional graphic system.An actual loop power network is taken as a calculation example of the software; we are able to verify the practicability and validity of the software.In the end, some main conclusions are summarized and some proposals are suggested for further study and development of this software.
