Integrating the technology of navigation, Geographic Information System (GIS), communication and embedded computer, vehicle navigation system provides some navigational and geographic information for vehicle driver. In this paper, I introduce firstly the principle and hardware frame of vehicle navigation system in my study task, and then analyze how to develop the software. More deep discussion is invested to each part in the follow chapters. It is the developing mode of Windows CE applied to my study that is reported as the first part. Several technical topics, I have worked on, are specially discussed. At the last of this part, I introduce a new software application framework on Windows CE operating system. The work of electronic map display system is the principal part of the entire software design. From the angle of software development, and base on the display principle in computer, I divide the total system framework into several software modules, so I can settle them respectively. HSRI Shapefile format is currently popular to store electronic map data. The paper introduces it and its application in my study briefly while designing its software model. The last part is the handle of GPS and GSM. I have introduced how to apply GPS data to vehicle navigation. Besides the process theory, all steps are discussed in detail. In the same chapter, I spend several sections on explaining serial communication in Windows CE. As Windows CE operates at seria communication by its synchronous I/O routines, a new C++ class is designed, which is discussed here. To enable vehicle to communicate by wireless, I add the D10 module and make use of its short message service (SMS). All its related application is discussed in the paper.
