The film insulation is widely used in AC speed-control machine, its property has influence on the life and reliability of machine greatly. During the long operational time, the film insulation is exposed to the electrical, thermal and mechanical stresses, which will cause insulation degradation and lead to breakdown finally. Therefore, insulation diagnose and evaluation of residual life are necessary and important to ensure the high efficiency and security of AC speed-control machine.Considering some problems that existed on the partial discharge-resistance test device used in our laboratory, this paper designed the test system again. The new test device emphasized on the main performance, the realizing method of hardware and software and the design of interface circuit, the great improvement on the anti-interference and shielding environment jamming are achieved. The testing result showed that the improved device using MCS-51 as the core can shield the disturbance and operate normally. The new device has the feature of high reliability, high stability and safety, and the volume was reduced apparently. In the paper, some partial discharging tests have been done using the new device. The result showed that the time to breakdown of Katpon polyamide film is 13 hours and 51 hours at 40kv/mm and 20kv/mm respectively which coordinates to Katpon's. The preliminary test to the Katpon's polyarnide-CR and nano-hybrided PI film made in our laboratory proved that the resistance to partial discharge has been improved compared with original in some degree. Finally, the paper analyzed the possible reason of the phenomenon.
