Sheration-Universal Hotel located in the North Hollywood of Los Angeles, California, USA is a twenty story building consisting of ductile moment-resistant reinforced concrete frame structural system. Total 16 time-histories responses of acceleration are recorded during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, California. Based on these recorded strong motions, the seismic performance of the hotel structure is evaluated in this dissertation .The main studies are following:l.The Sheration-Universal Hotel are selected for case study, and the structure scheme, site condition, and strong motions recorded from Northridge earthquake are collected.2.The data of strong motions are analyzed and explained preliminarily.3. Transfer function method is employed to determine the dynamic characteristics of the building based on the strong earthquake records.4 Two different types of linear elastic models are used for structural dynamic analysis:A simplified model with lumped mass at per floor and detailed three-dimensional finite element model. Results are compared based on the models.5.The torsional response of the structure and influence of higher mode shape are assessed.6. Linear elastic dynamic response analyses are conducted using both simplified and detailed analytical models and the reliability of system identification techniques and SAP2000 computer programs are evaluated.
