Vernacular architecture is the type of architecture in a specific country at a specific time that represents a combination of the regional geographic features, climatic conditions, and characteristic culture. Besides that vernacular architecture itself is the most important part of vernacular culture, it also contains large amount information of other culture elements. The study of vernacular architecture is very important for the study of both architecture culture and Chinese traditional architecture. In the present work, Hakka-colony architecture with its interior decoration is studied.Hakka ethnic group is very special in the system of Han ethnic group, the majority of Chinese. Based on the study of Hakka ethnic group, the present work investigated the geographic, social, economic and culture background of Hakka architecture. In the present work, the term "Hakka colony architecture" came into being.There are many different types of Hakka-colony architecture. The present work systematically categorized the Hakka-colony architecture. Based on the structural difference, all the Hakka buildings can be put into three categories, which are single-floor buildings, multiple-floor buildings, and the mixture of both single-floor and multiple-floor buildings. According to the analysis of structure, appearance and materials, it was concluded that all types of Hakka architecture originated from "Mentang Wu"The ancestors of Hakka ethnic group were Han from the northern China. Due to the wars and catastrophes in the history, they continually moved southward, and eventually formed the Hakka ethnic group. Based on the comparison between Hakka-colony architecture and other traditional Chinese architecture and the comparison among different types of Hakka-colony architecture, the present study summarized the characteristics of interior spatial arrangement, decoration and furniture of Hakka architecture. It was found that Hakka architecture inherited many characteristics of traditional Chinese architecture, and at the same time the specific style of itself was developed.As a part of the pluralism of art in the world, the current architecture tends to be more vernacular. How to design the vernacular and ethnic style architecturebecomes an interesting topic. Based on the systematical investigation of Hakka architecture with its interior decoration, the present work discussed the application of Hakka architecture characteristics to modern design. This work is also a theoretical study for the protection and development of vernacular architecture.
