Shape Memory Alloys(SMA) are functional materials with special characteristics such as shape memory effect, pseudoelasticity, variable stiffness. Because of these characteristics, SMA has become one of the most important materials for sensors and actuators and played a more and more important role in structural control. In this thesis, the special characteristics are introduced detailedly at first. Secondly analyses the microcosmic mechanism of these characteristics. Then investigates to control passively the seismic responses of buildings using SMA tendons based on understanding fully these characteristics. The hysteresis model of SMA tendons is derived. At last, a numerical example illustrate is given, which is calculated with ANSYS. The numerical results show that the seismic response of the building can be reduced significantly.
