This article analyzed the stresses in the slag crusher shell with large openings in accordance with the principles and methods of analytic design (elastic stress analysis and plastic failure rules) using finite element analysis method and ANSYS program, not only a factual engineering problem is solved, but also come to the general conclusions by examination of the effects of some variables. That is, when a large opening exists on the cylindrical shell, high local stresses will present in the opening nozzles. So it is not safe to design by equi-area method of reinforcement. It shall be carefully considered when the equi-area method of reinforcement is used for large opening, external pipe loads, close to non-continuous area or fatigue loads.
