Optimization research of safety factor and reliability index of slope stability based on an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) is carried out in this paper. Especially a new calculation method of slope with piles is brought forward. The optimization mathematical model of stabilizing piles in landslide stability has been established. Consequently some hard problems are figured out and approving practical results are obtained. The main achievements can be summarized as follows.Based on the simple genetic algorithm, concerning the characteristic of robust global search capability but poor local search and the phenomena of premature convergence in practical application of GA, an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) is presented, in which the niche technology and memory are brought in. Thus the population diversity is maintained and the optimal solution in each generation is reserved. The problem of least safety factor and reliability index of slope can come down to extremum problem of objective function with multi-variables. The IGA is adopted in this paper on the slope stability analysis, which improves the solving efficiency remarkably. Slope stability programs are compiled not only with regard to homogeneous soil but also concerning the multi soil strata case, which is analyzed thoroughly. Program corresponding to the incomplete arc slope is compiled too. The slope stability programs, based on the recommended genetic algorithm, have traits of operational facility, computational rapidity, results stability and nice performance.The analysis of bank slope stability in piled wharf has long concerned the port-engineering field. The problem of pile's performance in the bank slope stability of piled wharf has not settled well all the while. A modified method of the slope stability analysis of piled wharf is presented. This method is concerned in the antisliding effects of foundation piles according to the properties of piles stability of bank slope and interaction between piles and soil. The optimization calculation by IGA is employed. Some corresponding clauses in existing codes are suggested be modified. Aiming at the problem of stabilizing pile of landslide, the imbalance thrust method is adopted to calculate the thrust of stabilizing pile. The pile segment under the slide surface is treated as elastic. The cost of stabilizing pile is optimized by IGA in this paper for the first time. Corresponding program is established and some instructive conclusions are obtained.
